Somalia: Abducted Canadian journalist is pregnant

MOGADISHU (Mareeg)--Amanda Lindhout, a Canadian journalist who was abducted by Somali gunmen in the Somali capital Mogadishu about eight months ago is reportedly pregnant after she was apparently raped by her abductors, sources told Mareeg’s office in Mogadishu on Wednesday.

Sources say the Canadian journalist Amanda and an Australian photojournalist are being held by the militia in the northeastern neighbourhood of Suqa Holaha neighborhood in Mogadishu.

The abductors have demanded $2.5 million of ransom from the two journalists to release.

Amanda and the Australian photojournalist once escaped from a house in Suqa Holaha neighnourhood and entered a mosque near by, but they were recaptured again.

The militia who kidnapped the journalists claims they are al-shabab Islamists. Some reports suggest that one the abductors made Amanda as his wife.

The journalists were kidnapped between the Afgoye district and the capital city with their Somali photojournalist, Abdifatah Mohammed Elmi, who was acting as a translator for the two in September 2008, but Abdifitah was released after 5 months.

Abdiftah said that he did not see Amanda and colleague since the militia abducted them.

  2. How come the media hasn't mentioned this??

  3. How do you know this is true?? what confirmation do you have??? Do you not know that posting negative stories such as this one without confirming them is causing pain and suffering to a family who does not need any more than they already have.

  4. The above story was posted on Mareeg, a Somalian news outlet. The mainstream western media has always had a tendancy to tread lightly when it comes to victims of sexual assualt, particularly when the alleged assualt is not verified. The above story is feasible, but how reliable are the "sources?" Best not to put her friends and family through this sort of distress if you're not really sure.

  5. The above story was posted by Mareeg, a Somalian news outlet. Although the story sounds feasible, who knows how reliable the "sources" are. The Western media tends to tread lightly when cases of sexual assualt are involved and tries to keep the victim's identity confidential. No point distressing Amanda's friends and relatives over something that might be little more than hearsay.

  6. The pregnancy story was also carried earlier this month on the "War is Boring" blog run by David Axe, a onetime journalist with good contacts in Somalia. This might also explain why the "unconditional release" buzz suddenly went dead. It's hard to portray yourself as a just freedom fighter when you're raping people!

  7. My heart goes out to her family. I was fortunate enough to meet a sibling of hers and the family is very distressed over her surcumstanses. I wish her freedom and hope, and enlightenment for her captors.

  10. The Somalians involved in this entire kidnapping are misleading EVERYONE, folks. Seriously.

Until they show "Proof of Life" (i.e. confirmation of safety via video footage with day/date evidence [such as Amanda or Nigel holding a current newspaper or weekly magazine ... Time / Newsweek / etc.]), then I fear that they may no longer be alive.

It is a sad thought to consider, but without any credible verification on their situation (no, the Somalia Journalist Rights Agency, nor its "executive director" Daud Abdi Daud, nor the Somalian newspaper "Mareeg" do NOT count as credible sources), then I fear that the majority of alleged info about Amanda / Nigel are ficticious. Just smoke and mirrors. And the most recent news of Amanda's pregnancy is just another bogus attempt to ratchet up the distress level of the Lindhout family and everyone else concerned by her plight. Seriously.

The groups in Somalia are MONEY orientated. They live in an anarchic country that has NO government since the early 1990's. Kidnapping, sea piracy, extortion, "Nigerian scams", and so on ARE the norm there. Just standard operation procedure for them. No scruples whatsoever.

So, in closing here, I would dismiss ALL info coming from the above sources. More than likely this was an inside job, and I'll bet you that most of the players involved in Amanda and Nigel's abduction and / or guaranteeing their safety prior to their abduction (i.e. the Somalian "fixer", the armed security staff / bodyguards, the staff at the hotel in which Amanda and Nigel were staying, etc.) are in cahoots on this and are foisting these periodic updates (Nigel and Amanda are suffering from "body itching" or "are sick" or "attempted to escape and flee into a local mosque" or "Amanda is pregnant following a rape by one of her abductors") are more than likely FALSE.

Proof of Life ... we need verifiable proof of life folks.

God have mercy on Amanda and Nigel and everyone pulling for them.

(I do hope that this comment is posted by Terry ... may be a little too controversial, but needs to be addressed).

  11. Amanda is a Canadian citizen. Why has our government not acted by sending the JTF-2 to rescue her from these savage creatures?

I can see a brief delay while intelligence/planning takes place, but eight months?

  12. Info on the "organization" (yeah, right) Terror Free Somalia Foundation who posted above:

    http://terrorfreesomalia.blogspot.com/

Once again, yet ANOTHER dubious website / blogger foisting second hand, third hand, or even fantasy inspired "info" on Amanda and Nigel (and the plight of Somalians and the big bad Islamic front there). Nothing more than an Internet false front for dispersal of terrorist / pirate / bandit / nefarious individuals linked to the rubbish heap known as Somalia.

Just take a look at the blog site mentioned above. Second rate and slapped together. Plus, this guy is based out of COLUMBUS, OHIO, U.S.A.? (P.O. Box 248654 COLUMBUS OH 43224 - run by "Patrick Poole" ). What up wit dat? C'mon people, how is a guy in the midwest section of the U.S.A. gonna be on top of what is going on "on the ground" in Somalia? Put two and two together. Just another fabrication ... smoke and mirrors.

Use caution when analyzing any statements, information, or claims from the various websites claiming to promote the plight of Somalians and their country. Primarily lies and falsehoods. MONEY (your money, your government's money, bleeding heart's money) is all that they are after ... seriously.

    Thanks Terry. Hang in there.

  13. Correction for the previous post above ... "Abdirahman Warsame" (NOT "Patrick Poole" who turns out to be a contributor to the Terror Free Somalia website) is the "Executive Director" of terrorfreesomalia.blogspot.com website / organization.

Clicking on the name of the person / group (who posted the above entry here on this blog) will only bring up the Post Office Box info and "Patrick Poole's" name.

    Curiouser and curiouser ...

  16. In response to the rather detailed comments on the "Terror Free Somalia Foundation" fake blog above, I noticed the entry was written in very fragmented English and made references to Somalian tribes a Westerner wouldn't know anything about. This bothers me. Who out there is monitoring THIS particular blog and for what purpose? Could someone associated with Lindhout and Brennan's captors be looking at blogs such as this one to determine the effects their "news releases" are having?

  17. In response to the post dated April 13, 2009 at 6:56 AM, I think that you hit the nail on the head with your observation. This whole thing reeks of a scam. The Somalians involved in this thing are working together in order to make $$$. They release these "reports" at odd intervals in order to rachet up the discomfort level of everyone involved in obtaining a safe release for Amanda and Nigel.

The periodic posts are (in my opinion as I have been following this from the beginning), FALSE ... ficticious. Nothing but lies.

I have a really bad feeling that Nigel and Amanda are no longer alive. I base this upon there being no credible info on their current whereabouts or condition. In addition, the various people who were with Amanda and Nigel when they were abducted, and who have been subsequently "released" have NOT come forward and made ANY public statement about what transpired during the abduction. Nada. Zero. So I think that the Somali fixer never was "abducted", only told to hide out or lay low and pretend that he was abducted while his associates tried to bilk the Canadian and Australian government's out of $2.5 million dollars (or so we're led to believe). Furthermore, the fixer upon his "release" was said to have had his own father act as a liasion between the abductors and the so called individuals (read: Somali clansmen) working for Amanda and Nigel's release by then delivering provisions to the abductors. How screwed up is that? Imagine a loved one of yours who is kidnapped, held hostage for months, and then released, only then for you to be a step and fetch it boy for their personal comfort. Something is really wrong here.

Probably the best thing that we can do with regard to Amanda and Nigel's status is to sit tight and stay off of this website and the Facebook sites devoted to them. The reason for this is that I believe that the abductors are savy enough to use the Internet to gauge the level of impact their statements are having upon the public, in addition to trolling sites like this to obtain any futher info that they can use to possibly exploit Amanda and Nigel.

This latest release about Amanda being pregnant is just a bunch of bullsh*t. Next, a few months from now, they'll come out with a release that the child was born stillborn or that Amanda died in labor or some other wacked out tale. Don't believe ANYTHING coming out of that douche bag of a country called Somalia. There is a reason why they are referred to as a Third World Country (or should that be Turd World Country).

We need PROOF OF LIFE for Amanda and Nigel.

  18. Regarding the above post for April 13, 2009 at 8:17, I think you are right that we should avoid posting anything that could potentially aggravate the situation even in a small way. It is interesting to note that News Mail, an Australian news source, supposedly "confirmed" Amanda's pregnancy through a SOMALIAN JOURNALIST but then pulled the story off its site almost as soon as they posted it. I don't pretend to know for sure, but I have a hunch News Mail suspected it was being manipulated. I think people are finally starting to realize that EVERYTHING coming out of Somalia should be taken not just with a grain of salt, but with a whole shaker! There is a good reason the Canadian media has been conspicuously quiet. It would be irresponsible to send out unconfirmed stories that merely aggravate an already difficult situation. Just as in the case of Melissa Fung, silence is the best way to protect those in harms way for now. I will not post anything further and suggest others consider doing the same. Over and out.

  19. For the poster above (on April 14th, 2009 @ 8:08 AM) ... I agree with you 100% with regard to using caution and skepticism of ANY non-verifiable "information" being disseminated out of Somalia.

I now believe that the so-called news blackout of Amanda and Nigel's plight by both the Canadian and Australian governments (and their respective domestic media sources ... TV, magazine, newspaper, Internet, etc.) is a GOOD thing. I was growing more and more impatient with both country's "powers that be" over the lack of info on Amanda and Nigel, but I think that they have exercised great care in not fanning the flames on this whole thing.

What the abductor's don't know about the government's intents (i.e. being left in the dark / uncertainty) is weighing HEAVILY upon them ... these fools don't know whether a bag of cash in going to magically appear out of nowhere in order to satisfy their ransom demands, or if a commando style counter strike by either Canadian or Aussie special forces is going to rain hellfire down on their sorry asses. Hence, they are keeping everyone in the dark, so why shouldn't the Canadian and Aussie governments? Both sides are waiting for the other to show their hand (as if in a card game).

What I also fear is that the abductors will release yet another bogus claim or newsflash in a couple of weeks or months that states something to the effect that "Both Amanda and Nigel have seen the light and have decided to convert to Islam and renounce their respective country's citizenships and will be taking up the cause of Jihad in the name of Islam, Allah, and Muhammad (peace be upon him ... or whatever crap that they say following the mention of this bandit's name)." I would not be surprised at all.

Almost like concocting a ficticious story based upon the Patty Hearst abduction by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) back in 1974. If you are unfamiliar with the case of Patty Hearst, I suggest that you head over to Wikipedia and do a search on her name. You'll see an informative entry on her background. It would only be too fitting for Amanda and Nigel's abductors to use something akin to what I mentioned above as sort of an "it's no longer an abduction / kidnapping scenario on our (the abductors) part, but now has become one of a conscious choice by Amanda and Nigel to stay here with their newfound Islamic brothers and sisters in Somalia."

And we (and the world) would never see anything from them again. Poof! Nada. Zip. Plus, this would be a fitting cover for the abductors to foist upon the public in order to possibly explain why Amanda and Nigel are no longer to be found (i.e. they were possibly executed by the Somalian abductors back in October 2008 when their $2.5 million ransom was not met). No bodies, no evidence, and hopefully (by the abductor's possible hopes) no retrobution by the Canadians or Aussies (can you say "airstrikes"). Once again, WE NEED TO SEE PROOF OF LIFE. Just wait, I think one day we will see what has indeed occurred in this case. In due time I like to think that the truth will be known.

    Take care.

  20. My condolences to the families of both Amanda and Nigel for the current situation.

While this situation is reflective of the pervasive violence and disregard for life and liberty in Somaolia I ask that folks do not use this as a way to communicate disparaging remarks about 'Third World' countries or whatever term you choose to use (see posting:April 13, 2009 8:17 PM)

The individuals living in these countries live in fear daily, and while Amanda and Nigel have been victims of the escalation of violence (and strategies), fear of death, rape or kidnapping is a lifelong struggle and fear for the majority of citizens of Somalia. The current situation is a product of history and of the current economic order - something citizens of Somalia, and international visitors, have fallen victim to. This sentiment is likely something Amanda hoped to articulate in her journalism.

I hope for the release of Amanda and Nigel. My thoughts are with you.

  21. Seriously, isn't it time some country -- and why not Canada -- simply said okay, folks, that's enough of this kidnapping crap, and sent in someone like Canada's JTF-2 or the SAS or some really competent force (not the RCMP!) and through detective work, bribes and pure, simple violence, found people, rescued them if possible and blew away their captors? Barbaric Somalis, or barbaric anyone else, have to be forced under control, and taught that kidnapping will no longer be tolerated. Enough.

  22. Its not a racial issue.. but I now hate all other countries because of stuff like this. What is wrong with these people. Ban guns, rape and other shit in the countries. Why is their society so different, change it! Get them out of there, do they not matter..
